Stephen Porter is an active artist who has been creating and exhibiting sculpture for more than 50 years. His work is based on a formal vocabulary of geometric shapes arranged in ordered configurations; the size, proportion, and material of each of the elements together form structures to which we respond as purely sculptural ideas. These sculptures are not concerned with external subject matter, there is no metaphor. The subject matter is their geometry, conveying concepts of weight, tension, space, and gravity. The sculptures are concerned with the harmony created by these relationships and are an attempt to create beauty in formal structures.
Although he has worked in a variety of materials through the years, including wood, granite, and painted aluminum, sometimes in combination, Porter most often uses polished stainless steel, a material that reflects and refracts its surroundings in constantly changing ways, adding an element of playfulness to the formality of the work.
